However, some of the email addresses used by people who write to me for help finding jobs are slightly less than professional. The same holds true for voice mail messages. I've listened to some messages, that never should have been heard by a potential employer, from people calling to arrange an interview.

The first impression you give an employer is the most important one. That first impression includes email, phone, fax and other electronic communications, as well as your resume and cover letter. If you have a bizarre voicemail message the caller might decide not to leave a message.
